Perth Wildcat co-captain Brad Robbins has announced his retirement effective immediately. Robbins, who walks away from the game at the age of 27 played 213 games for the Wildcats, the Taipans and the Giants, affectionately known as the ‘Angry Ant’ due to his intense physical play with little regard for his body etched a reputation for his hard-nosed defence, often at time frustrating his opponents and occasionally himself.
Make fun of Robbins’ haircut and beard all you want but his decision to hang up the boots in what could be considered as his prime is a courageous one. Robbins’ ‘put the body on the line’ play style has taken a toll on his body and he believes his body is not up to the rigours of a hectic NBL season. Robbo is a competitor and one that gives 100% all the time and if he feels that he can no longer give 100% then he is the sort of guy that will step aside.
In retirement, we are sure Robbo will commit more time to being there for his son; which to us, shows way more of his character than the reputation he has on the court. Robbo, we are glad to have had you in the NBL, through the ups and downs you have led the way, excited many home fans and irritated many more opposition fans. All the best in retirement, your journey from fringe NBL player to championship winning co-captain is an inspiring one.
