Wollongong Hawks veteran Glen Saville announced his retirement today ending a stellar nineteen year NBL career. A season ending knee injury led Saville to hang up the boots earlier than he was hoping to, is the latest kink in the Hawks injury riddled season.
The truth is that most of us don’t know the NBL without Glen Saville. As Wildcats fans we remember Saville as the guy sooking when he doesn’t get the call he was after, the guy trying to trash talk his opponent, the guy who dropped like a sack of potatoes following an Alex Loughton elbow and a guy who was never far from the action; but the truth is, Saville is one of the all-time greats of the NBL.
Saville came into the league as a pimply faced teenager straight out of high school and set the league alight with his versatility and athletic style of play, quickly becoming a Hawks fan favourite. Saville left the Hawks to play in the stacked teams of the Gorj Kings dynasty before returning ‘home’ once things went sour at the Land of Purple.
In his 19th season, Saville proved that his games wasn’t as grey as his hair, leading the Hawks through a good start to the current NBL season. To the Hawks credit, they have remained classy through the injuries, not once laying blame for their current slump. Saville joins Lance Hurdle and Rhys Martin on the sidelines and it just simply isn’t fair that someone of Saville’s stature in the league won’t get the opportunity to leave the game on his terms.
Well done on a fine career, my friend.
